First, I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to every person in Tahrir Square who made dreams come true. Congratulations to you all and all Egyptians. I am in debt to you all.
When I first moved to the UK, I used to work for a recruitment agency called Adecco. I was a temp. They gave me work in different places. Most of them were industrial jobs, i.e. in warehouses and factories. RoyalMail, Britvic , Arla Foods etc. I didn't mind at the time. After all, I had a pregnant wife, rent, my mother back in Egypt to help. A lot of responsibilities. It never failed to surprise me at the time that all my line managers and bosses were very nice and kind to me. Maybe because I am the sort of person who laughs a lot and is easy going, I thought. Until one of my line managers told me that he admires the fact that I can do anything with the tools or the things around me. He told me that he watched me tightening a screw on a machine with a five pence because I didn't have a screw driver handy. At the time, I didn't understand. To me, it was just the way I was brought up and always did. To make do with what I've got. To me, the five pence was "means" or a "tool" to accomplish what I needed to do.
Over the last couple of weeks, so many reports, reviews, analysis and news from the media where vomiting how the role of the so called " Social Media" influenced the recent events in Egypt!! How Facebook and Twitter helped the protesters. Now I'll be a fool if I denied that they were used by some of the protesters and activists. But P L E A S E !!! Yes they were "tools" like my five pence. But the revolution needed the PEOPLE. They made it happen. From the very first single person who said enough is enough to the millions who joined in. It is quite common for people to exaggerate on the web. From the guy who is after a blind date who portrays himself as the new James Dean to the one in a forum who says he knows anything and everything that it is to know about the environment and climate change. These are the ones that I really really genuinely wary of. The are the people who intentionally or unintentionally make this world as fucked up as it is. They are the ones who keep injecting the poison in a honey covered case for the masses to swallow and digest. They are the ones who tell you that "you cannot change the world".
Yes you can. And please do not let anyone tell you otherwise. This is not me being on a high of optimism. I do believe in every single word. I live by it. And here is the news for you : It is not just me. There are millions like me in this world. I am sure that you yourself know someone like that. You just don't look deep or long enough. Rules and laws are there to organise, facilitate and make things easier for us, not the other way around.
I didn't really intend to write such a long journal entry but I guess I just got carried away. So enough of me whinging before you all fall asleep. Thank you all for the congratulations notes. It really means a lot. Now go and show some love to all those Egyptian protesters through your work. Better still, if you haven't planned your holiday yet, how about visiting Egypt. People over there need all the support they can get. Show them that they've done something magical. They need to know that people are totally different than their politicians. Besides, you'll have one of the most unforgettable holidays of your life
